There have been many games over the recent years that, despite having high quality, have not been well received by the audience and fans. Most of the time, this lack of reception has led to the temporary or complete death of that franchise or IP, which is extremely tragic.
In this article, we are going to take a look a some of these overlooked games and why they were not initially well received.
Mad Max
Mad Max is considered to be one of the most unique and different games of the eighth generation. Although this title suffered from a series of general flaws and did not have an extraordinary quality overall, it was infinitely entertaining and fully capable of engaging the audience in its world. From the post-apocalyptic world of the game to the awesome battles and engaging side activities, this game brought a very special and interesting experience for the audience.
However, this game did not get as much attention as it probably should have and even accurate sales statistics are not available for it. Maybe if the general audience’s reception of this entertaining game was more, we could get a sequel with better and more complete quality that would fix the flaws and shortcomings of the first game. But anyway, Mad Max can be mentioned as one of the titles that the audience treated with indifference.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
After the much-discussed launch of Assassin’s Creed Unity, which was heavily influenced by the technical problems of this work, the general view of the audience towards the Assassin’s Creed franchise was extremely negative. This negative and cold atmosphere affected the next version of Assassin’s Creed, namely Syndicate. Not only was the initial reception of the audience at the time of release much weaker and lower than previous versions, but the game also did not achieve great sales afterwards. According to the latest announced statistics, it only sold close to five million copies, although this statistic has definitely changed, but considering the standards of Assassin’s Creed, it is relatively disappointing.
But let’s judge honestly, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, as the last title with a classic structure (before the release of Mirage), was extremely well-made and entertaining. Not only did this work fully preserve its identity, but it also introduced new and fresh elements to the series well and the open world of the game was full of side activities and attractive side levels. From missions related to Graham Bell and Darwin to numerous side activities. Also, it should be said that the character Jacob was one of the best among the characters of this series and was extremely believable. But anyway, the audience, with their indifference and unkindness towards Syndicate, severely destroyed this game.
Sleeping Dogs
The experience of a modern open-world game set in Hong Kong, with excellent hand-to-hand combat and a gripping story, should definitely be able to attract a bigger audience, right?
Sleeping Dogs was a unique and exclusive title that we have rarely seen anything like it even today in the world of video games. At a time when audiences identified open-world games with GTA, Sleeping Dogs was considered a modern, different experience with an extremely engaging atmosphere. It’s about an undercover cop who infiltrates the heart of Hong Kong’s criminal gangs and along the way, encounters various crimes and tragedies.
The game’s hand-to-hand combat is still engaging even today, a decade later, and can entertain players. Sleeping Dogs had a world full of potential and if the game had better sales and better reception, we could have experienced a sequel to this game. Unfortunately, this game has now become a forgotten title.
Resident Evil Revelations 1 & 2
Before the release of the seventh installment of the Resident Evil series, this franchise was not in a great state and people were extremely dissatisfied with its situation. The ambitious title, Resident Evil 6, contrary to Capcom’s expectations, did not receive a suitable feedback and a severe negative attitude formed around this franchise. During those same years, we saw the release of two versions of the series spin-off, named Revelations, which were mostly centered around characters other than Leon, Chris, and Ada, and we also saw the return of popular characters like Barry Burton.
I can easily say that both versions of this spin-off were severely underrated and did not receive the feedback and reception they deserved. The first version of Revelations performed well in terms of atmosphere and world-building and offered a classic experience of the series. On the other hand, Revelations 2 had a very creative design and also offered one of the most different co-op experiences. It is true that these two works were not extraordinary, but they are still important games and due to the negative atmosphere of that period, they became victims of the circumstances and did not achieve what they deserved.
Call of duty: Advanced Warfare
The Call of Duty series, between the years 2014 to 2018, had a very contradictory performance and we saw different works with different atmospheres and settings. One of these different versions was Advanced Warfare, which depicted a futuristic narrative of modern warfare. Despite the fact that this title had a completely acceptable story section, a very entertaining multiplayer section, and an infinitely attractive co-op, the audience did not receive it as well as it should have.
But if we judge fairly, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare was an exciting and entertaining shooting experience that, especially thanks to the attractive design of the maps, provided memorable moments for the audience. This work is also another one of the titles that fell victim to peripheral issues and could not attract the audience well.
Signalis
The Survival Horror genre, or Survival Horror, has seen many small and big games over the years. Failure in this genre is a very common occurrence, but in the meantime, sometimes some works, despite their very high quality, do not receive a suitable output and in terms of sales, income generation, and audience attraction, they do not appear as acceptable.
The game Signalis, developed by rose-engine, has incorporated many of the classic and hardcore elements of a Survival Horror work. From the limited inventory mechanism that forces the audience to make decisions, to the very heavy and special atmosphere and lack of ammunition and items.
Despite the fact that the game was popular among critics and also scored a significant Metacritic score of 84, among the Survival Horror fans, it did not grab as much attention as expected and since there are no exact sales statistics for this title, it can be concluded that the game ultimately did not perform significantly in terms of income generation and sales. For lovers of classic games of this genre, Signalis is definitely an amazing experience that will surprise you with its high quality.
Titanfall 2
The final game in this article is dedicated to the incredibly engaging shooter from Respawn Entertainment, namely Titanfall 2. From the very first version, this game showed that it has an extraordinary potential to become a big name in the world of FPSs. The game’s story section was excellent, the gameplay was smooth, soft, and enjoyable, and technological elements like wall-running gave a special pleasure to the audience.
But unfortunately, EA’s strange and foolish decision to release this title and Battlefield 1 within just a week severely affected its sales statistics and audience attraction. Not only could Titanfall 2 not achieve the sales that EA usually expects (which is usually very high), but it also somehow affected the sales of Battlefield 1. In any case, the title Apex Legends was born from the ashes of Titanfall, but the failure of Titanfall 2 is one of the most upsetting events in gaming in the twenty-first century. A title that perhaps if it was released at a different time and under different circumstances, it would have been more welcomed and praised, and even had the possibility to continue its life to this day.
