After being in development for 8 years, the latest release from the renowned Rocksteady Studios has hit the market.  Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League entered the gaming scene with high expectations. Whether or not the expectations were justified is a different discussion but after the massive success of the batman series, this was inevitable.

Unfortunately, the reception to this game has not been great to say the least. As players dive into the world of antiheroes and villains, questions are brought up about the impact of this game on Rocksteady’s future.

According to data collected on Steam DB, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League recorded fewer than half as many concurrent players on Steam on its first day as Marvel’s Avengers. with 13,459 players at the time of its release on Steam. Meanwhile, Marvel’s Avengers recorded 29,916 players on the first day of its release

Moreover, to enjoy both Suicide Squad and Marvel’s Avengers titles, you need an online connection. While Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League required a permanent connection, Marvel’s Avengers required a one-time check at the start of each session.

Metacritic users have written more than 600 negative reviews about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. User rating for Suicide Squad on Metacritic fell below 4.

Fall from Grace

Setting aside the usual technical and performance issues of this era of video games, early reviews and player feedback for this game have been mixed at best. Judging by the online reactions and reviews, Suicide Squad has already damaged Rocksteady’s reputation to some degree and critics as well as gamers are questioning whether this was the right game for this studio to make. Although, even if it was the right game, people are not happy with the quality of the product. More importantly, they think that it’s a departure from the studio’s signature style.

We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for this game. Rocksteady have talked about upcoming seasonal updates: “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will have regular post-launch seasonal updates, earnable at no additional cost through playing the game.”

The first Suicide Squad DLC featuring The Joker will arrive in March 2024 and players should expect more characters to arrive. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is now available on the PC, PS5 and Xbox series X/S platforms.
