Why’d I become a priest? Every bad thing you experience, every trauma, they… they never leave you. Sure you might forget about them for a while, but when the next one comes along – no matter how slight – it brings everything back. It reminds you of the weight you’re lugging around. And I knew I couldn’t carry all that on my own. – Father James
Along with all the problems the game has, Mafia III Definitive Edition has a unique story. The story which makes the game worth to be experienced at least for once. The story which drives you to finish the game and watch the Ending. Today at Gamefa, we are going to take a look at the game and see what kind of game we are facing with.
For sure, Story of Mafia III is the best aspect of the game which puts you in shoes of a black skin Vietnam war veteran called Lincoln Clay who just came back from war and looking for peace and live with his family. However, his good days in New Bordeaux do not last long. A few days after coming back from war, he finds out that Sammy Robinson ( The man who grew Lincoln up ) has some problems with paying his debt to Sal Marcano. Lincoln helps Sammy to pay his debt, but Sal and his son, Giorgi Marcano cross Sammy Robinson, Ellis and Lincoln. In the end, Lincoln is the only man who survives and now, he only has one goal; Killing Sal Marcano and taking everything he has. On his way to reach Sal, Lincoln uses the help of people like Cassandra, Vito Scaletta, Thomas Burke and a CIA operator in Vietnam war, John Donavan.
Concerning Mafia games history, Mafia III’s Story is the only aspect of the game that comparable to the previous games. Hanger 13 is doing it’s best in keeping player in the game, using the story, It only takes a few hours for players to find out that Mafia III has almost no problem in it’s plot, storytelling and Characterizations. Lincoln abilities, history, talent and his honors in war are not told in only one or two cutscenes. After some missions, Father James, Donavan and McGuire tell something new about Lincoln Clay. Every cutscene is like a piece of a puzzle. Putting these pieces together, will help you to know Lincoln Clay better. Hanger 13 does an exemplary job in storytelling. Notions like love, family, loyalty, law, war, religion and most importantly, racism are shown in Mafia III story. You can talk and analyze characters of game for hours. The game also is full of great dialogs. So when playing Mafia III, you might need a pen and a notebook to take some notes.
Mafia III Definitive Edition is able to cover a lot of technical problems of original version. So this time, graphic is not the worst part of the game. Sure, the most disappointing part of Mafia III Definitive Edition, is gameplay, which any gamer can feel it after spending a few hours in game. Now, if you played Mafia II and Mafia, you’re going to be disappointed even more, because you are expecting something like previous games of the series but Mafia III Definitive Edition is not delivering it. Before everything, let’s talk about what we can do and what we can’t do in game! Unfortunately, compared to other open world games of this generation, you can do almost nothing in Mafia III. You can’t eat, you can’t refuel, you can’t rob and you can’t even buy clothes or accessories. There are only some garages which let you to customize your cars. To buy weapons and ammo, you have to call Cassandra’s contact and he will show up in a few seconds. Actually, he is the only weapon shop of the game. As an open world game, you can only do a few things in Mafia III world. Collecting magazines and electronic parts are boring over time and Mafia III Can’t offer you anything else. While there is no way to buy new clothes, Lincoln has some outfits in his closets. Mafia III Definitive Edition is a package of Original game and All 3 DLCs released for it. But still, you might feel you need something else to wear. Something different. Which is impossible. To refill your health bar, you should use some kind of aid kits. There is nothing to eat or drink in this game.
One of positive aspects of Mafia III Definitive Edition is driving system. Every car belongs to a specified class and every class has different cars. Doesn’t matter what kind of car you are driving, it’s always fun to start the engine and explore in New Bordeaux. As I said, you can also customize your car in garages. Customization system has no problem you can change color or even plates. In Mafia II sometimes you really needed to change your plate because Vito and his car were “Wanted”. But in Mafia III there is no “wanted system”. You might like to change the plate of your car but it’s not necessary. You can always have a new car. Thomas Burke has a friend and his job is to deliver you cars. So when you feel you need some new wheels, you can always count on him. It’s not only that, this guy will let you to choose what kind of car you want. Expect for locked cars, you can ask for any car you want.
You can always carry two weapons at the same time. A heavy weapon like shotguns or Rifles and a small weapon which usually is a pistol. Mafia III Definitive Edition has a good arsenal. Weapons verity is not the best in the series but you will not feel lack of weapons verity. One of the best aspect of the game, is the combat system. In Mafia III Definitive Edition you can sneak around and kill or knock out your enemies silently, or you can rush into them and use your weapons and explosives to eliminate them. You can use covers to stay out of sight or just simply use it as a shield. In Mafia III Definitive Edition, you can’t automatically switch between covers. A feature that could make the combat part of Mafia III even more fun. The biggest problem of Mafia III Definitive Edition, is the level design. From start of the game until the ending, you always have to follow a same structure in missions. Interrogate, kill and rob to make Sal Marcano’s men to show themselves. Kill him and give the district to Vito, Thomas or Cassandra. In the first few hours, this structure might be enjoyable for new players. But after a while, you’ll find yourself in an endless loop. So it’s not weird if you don’t like to play Mafia III Definitive Edition for hours. Plus, you have right if you don’t like to finish the game. Mafia III Definitive Edition is a boring game. Most of the missions look all the same and out of story missions, the open world of the game doesn’t offer you anything to stay in it. One of the biggest problems of Mafia III Definitive Edition, is NPC’s AI. Stealth in Mafia III is easy and the main reason, is your enemies terrible AI. This problem makes the game easier and on Normal difficulty, you won’t face any real challenge.
Mafia III was originally released in 2016. The original game was technically terrible. The Definitive Edition is a lot better in this case. However, still there are some technical problems and bugs which can be seen in the game. But this time, these problems are tolerable. Remember, Mafia III Definitive Edition goal is not to improve visual effects. So generally, pros and cons of Mafia III Definitive Edition and Mafia III are same. Animations of Mafia III Definitive Edition are superb! They are all realistic. Characters face designing is also acceptable and you don’t see any problems. Textures quality is not good enough and this is one of the issues that Mafia III has.
Music and voice acting is Mafia III Definitive Edition are in the best possible situation. For example, Hanger 13 put some music of popular bands like The Rolling Stones and Creedence Clearwater Revival which were popular rock bands in 60s. Hanger 13 also used proper voice actors. In overall, Mafia III Definitive Edition does a good job in this aspect.
Family is not who you born with, it’s who you die for. Mafia III’s story is based on the quote you just read! Gameplay and Graphic in Mafia III are not as good as we expected. Some problems are unacceptable and in the end, it’s probably going to be a boring game. But the story… story of the game is worth to be finished for at least one time. Now Mafia III is only an average game and of course, the worst game in Mafia series so far.
