Sony held the ‘State of Play’ presentation on January 31st, revealing several new games. in addition, it provided further information and detail about previously announced titles, giving us a more in-depth look at these games. Today, we are going to take a look at the biggest surprises and highlights of this exciting event.

Death Stranding 2

First game on the list is ‘Death Stranding 2: on the beach’, the anticipated sequel to the highly controversial and polarizing game released way back in 2019. Despite the unusual nature of the game, it did gain a big following, helped by the community themed online features of the game which created a network of players helping and relying on each other’s hints and structures.

The protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges makes a return in this sequel. However, now his companion is no longer a baby, but a strange puppet-like character. Things indicate that the narrative is going to get even weirder. Sam seems to be traveling across new locations such as Mexico and South America this time around.

The first game had its share of famous actors and celebrities portraying different characters. That has not changed with DS2. We finally got a look at Elle Fanning’s character and it was revealed that George Miller, the director of the Mad Max movie is going to play an important role in this game. According to Kojima himself there are many more characters we still haven’t seen from the game.

Death Stranding 2: on the beach, will be released exclusively for PS5 sometime in 2025.

Speaking of Kojima, during the event, he announced that he is working in cooperation with Playstation on a new action spy title not unlike to the Metal Gear series. This game is currently known by the name “Physint”. He spoke about this project as being both a film and game and that it is the culmination of his work over the years.

Silent Hill

There are no game shows nowadays that go by without the announcement of a new remake. Although this time it’s Silent Hill 2. the remake was unveiled some time last year but with the release of a new trailer, Bloober Team showcased some combat gameplay of this highly anticipated game. As the original game is an incredibly popular title in the among fans of the horror genre, expectation for the remake are going to be high. We still don’t have a release date for Silent Hill 2 remake but it will be released for the PS5 and PC platforms sometime this year.

That’s not all the Silent Hill news we got. Although having leaked before, Konami officially revealed a new free-to-play title for the PS5, named Silent Hill: The short message. You play as the female character Anita, who explores a location known as The Villa from a first-person perspective. This game is currently available for free!

Metro Awakening

In keeping with the horror theme, it’s time to talk Metro. 4A games unveiled the new entry in the Metro franchise which is a spin-off game developed for the Playstation VR2. The game will be released some time in 2024.

But don’t frown yet! if you are not the biggest fan of VR games or just don’t play them, then there’s good news, as this studio confirmed that the next main title in the Metro series is also in development.

Rise of the Ronin

After the positive reception of Wo long: Fallen Dynasty last year, Team Ninja is back with another action RPG title with a heavy focus on combat mechanics. Team Ninja showcased a gameplay trailer for Rise of the Ronin, the new game being developed by this talented team.

The game will feature a variety of different weapons and armor sets to collect and play with and a robust parry system. Oh and also a grappling hook! which can be utilized during combat as well as for traversal. Moreover, it seems that Team Ninja has abandoned the controversial loot system of the Nioh series. This game is set to be released on March 22, 2024 for the PS5.

Judas

The next game by Ken Levine, the creator of Bioshock is here. Judas is a first person action game developed by Ghost Story Games, featuring different weaponry and bots wielded by the character. The game takes place in a space city controlled entirely by machines, called Mayflower. Here are some of the things Ken Levine said about Judas during State of Play:

“Characters have always been the driving force in every game we’ve ever made. These personalities have always been at the heart of our stories. But what if you could choose between who to befriend and who to stab in the back?”

Judas will be released for the PS5, Xbox series X/S and PC platforms on an unknown date.
